Burgundy is rich in religious history. The Abbey De Fontenay is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1118, and now a world class UNESCO heritage site. The Abbaye De Notre Dame du Petit-Quincy at Tanlay was founded five years earlier in 1133. It’s monastic buildings and ruins are very atmospheric, and during the summer months it offers contemporary art exhibitions and nightly visits by torchlight.
The amazing Basilica St Magdalene at Vézelay, built in the same period, is also a UNESCO world heritage site, and sits at the top of a beautiful village.
Amongst the numerous churches that are must -sees is one just a stone’s throw from our house – Saint Jean Baptiste at Chassignelles, a beautiful example of 12th century architecture with remarkable murals, now standing amongst corn fields.
